Fast-Moving Kirk Downgrades To Depression; Could Degenerate Further In Coming Days

News / Virgin Islands / September 24, 2018

The weather system named Kirk, just Saturday a tropical storm, has lost steam and could further degenerate in the coming days, the National Hurricane Center (N.H.C.) said in its Monday 5:00 a.m. advisory.

Now a depression, the center of Kirk was located near latitude 9.5 North, longitude 37.4 West. Kirk is moving toward the west near 24 mph (39 km/h), and this fast motion is expected to continue for another day or so. A decrease in forward speed is expected by Wednesday, the N.H.C. said.

Maximum sustained winds remain near 35 mph (55 km/h) with higher gusts. Although slight strengthening is forecast during the next few days, it is possible that Kirk could degenerate into a trough of low pressure during the next day or two while it moves quickly across the tropical central Atlantic, according to N.H.C.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 1007 mb (29.74 inches).
