Torrential rainfall throughout the U.S. Virgin Islands on Thursday has led to flooding across the three islands, with St. Thomas and St. John experiencing the more severe cases, according to multiple videos posted by residents.
The National Weather Service says the weather was expected to end late Thursday morning. The Mapp administration announced the closing of government offices territory-wide, and the Department of Education announced the closure of public schools in both districts.
The Waste Management Authority said its sewer collection system was experiencing large inflow of storm water, which may cause overflows in low line areas. The flow of rain water and storm water entering the sewer system may exceed the pumping capacity at various pump stations which pump sewage from residential and business systems to the wastewater treatment plants.
W.M.A. said after the rain and the storm water run-off subsides, the sewer collection system may continue to be impacted. Waste Management also announced the temporary closure of the Transfer Station and Anguilla Landfill.
The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said some isolated electrical service interruptions were occurring across the St. Thomas-St. John district as a result of the inclement weather. Crews were dispatched to address service interruptions in the following areas: Wintberg, Tutu / Annas Retreat / Four Winds, Contant, Carolina,Glucksberg and Emmaus.
Residents have been posting their videos online, showing how the rain has affected commute and regular activity in the St. Thomas-St. John District. On St. Croix, while the rains were heavy for a moment, the downpour was not comparable to the weather that affected the sister islands.
