Items stolen in an armed robbery in Christiansted on Wednesday night were immediately recovered by police due to the quick action of witnesses in the area.
The incident took place on Queen Cross St. and police were dispatched to the scene just before 10:30 p.m.Witnesses reported seeing two men wearing dark clothing robbing two women of their handbags and other belongings. The victims were putting items into the trunk of their parked car when one suspect approached them from behind and stuck a hard object, thought to be a gun, into the side of one of the women and demanded her belongings. A struggle ensued between the two, but the victim was overpowered by the suspect, who took off with the bag in the direction of the public library. Witnesses ran after the suspect and managed to retrieve one of the bags that was stolen.
While that suspect ran away, another group of people held a man who was in the immediate area of the robbery until police arrived. Police said that man was not arrested at that time.
Officers conducted a search of the area and retrieved the rest of the stolen items, including jewelry, cash, personal documents and a laptop computer, nearby the government parking lot and the surrounding area. Police are still searching for the suspect who got away.
Detectives from the Criminal Investigation Bureau are investigating this case.
