ST. CROIX — David M. Brewer, Senior Archaeologist for the Virgin Islands State Historic Preservation Office will present a discussion of the State of Archaeology in the territory on Thursday night, with an emphasis on partnerships, regulatory activities, and some of the both long-standing and recent challenges facing the Division of Archaeology and Historic Preservation, according to a press release the National Park Service issued on Monday.
Mr. Brewer worked for the National Park Service’s Southeast Archaeological Center for almost twenty years before becoming the State Archaeologist for the US Virgin Islands in 2001. He served in that capacity in the St. Thomas office through 2009, when he had to leave to care for a family member. He recently returned as the Senior Archaeologist under the new administration, and is now stationed at Ft. Frederik here.
He plans to show how the division is currently working within the community to foster cultural resource recognition and appreciation, while attempting at the same time to maintain historic preservation awareness amid developmental opportunities. Mr. Brewer will also cover many of the beneficial aspects of the relationship with the National Park Service, both locally and on the federal level.
The lecture will be held from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the Danish Guinea West India Company Warehouse/ Slave Market Building. The Christiansted National Historic Site parking lot will be free and open for the event until 7:00 p.m.
Please note that a meeting of The Friends of the National Parks of St. Croix will meet from 4:30-5:30 p.m. just before the lecture in the same location.
