ST. CROIX — A man was shot dead near the H&R Grocery Store in Frederiksted on Tuesday night, VIPD Public Information Officer Kevin Jackson announced this afternoon.

According to Mr. Jackson, citing a preliminary police report, on Tuesday at about 7:39 p.m., the 911 emergency call center received a report of gunfire that was discharged in the vicinity of H&R Grocery Store, located on Queen Street in Frederiksted. Moments later at 7:42 p.m., a second call was made to the call center stating that an individual had been shot.

Officers traveled to the specified location of the shooting, only to be informed that the victim had been transported to the Juan F. Luis Hospital and Medical Center’s emergency room by private vehicle. Arriving at the medical facility, officers were unable to speak with the victim who was unconscious and being tended to by medical personnel, according to the release.

The victim sustained a gunshot wound and subsequently succumbed to his injuries. He was later identified as 30-year-old Juan Encarnacion of Estate White Lady.

Police say the homicide is under active investigation, and the VIPD is asking anyone with information concerning this incident to call the Criminal Investigation Bureau at 340-712-6024, 340-712-6037, 911 or the anonymous tip service, Crime Stoppers USVI, at 1-800-222-8477.
