ST. THOMAS — The Department of Planning and Natural Resources announced on Thursday that it has been working with the Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A.) to rid the Red Hook area of the decomposing sargassum seaweed that has produced a rotten stench.
The local agency, along with the E.P.A., will conduct air and water sampling to determine potential impacts to the surrounding communities. D.P.N.R. did not say when these tests would occur.
Due to the stench, the Division of Fish and Wildlife located in Red Hook was temporarily relocated to the Charles W. Turnbull Regional Library in Estate Tutu as of 1:00 p.m. Thursday. To contact Fish and Wildlife staff, please call (340) 774-0630.
D.P.N.R. Commissioner Dawn Henry apologized for any inconvenience the situation may have caused, and said efforts are being made to rectify the matter as soon as possible.
