ST. THOMAS — The Virgin Islands Police Department continued its community outreach, which is as part of the force’s ongoing strategy to fight crime, with an all-day basketball tourney dubbed “Basketball Fete” on Saturday, held at the Charlotte Amalie High School Gymnasium.
According to a release issued Tuesday, the event was initiated by St. Thomas Police Chief Jason Marsh’s office in collaboration with the Crime Prevention and the School Security Teams of the police department.
In relation to crime-fighting efforts, Chief Marsh said, “They know that we cannot do it alone and it will take all of us to work together in this endeavor.”
The tourney was well attended by parents and students, as well as V.I.P.D. officers. Over 60 teenagers participated in the tournament from a variety of schools and neighborhoods, the release says.
Motivational speaker Neville Williams from the Family Resource Center, and Chief Marsh exchanged dialogue with the students and young adults that attended, according to the release.
All students received medals at the end of the tournament for their effort, participation and attitude. A team named Regulators won the tournament, with the Enforcers coming in second, Survival third and Guidance fourth, according to the release.
The most valuable player recognition was awarded to Malvern Williams and Benjamin Berry. Both winners are 11th grade students at the Charlotte Amalie High School, according to the release.
Coach and mentor Myron Corbett assisted the V.I.P.D. in organizing the teams and games.
