ST. CROIX — A man was pronounced dead after the vehicle he was driving collided into another, partially ejecting him from the vehicle, V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Glen Dratte announced Monday.
The incident occurred on Sunday around the noon hour in the vicinity of West Airport Road, Williams Delight next to the Enfield Green Community.
According to Mr. Dratte, officers who were on the scene following the accident said that St. Croix Rescue members were admitting CPR to a Hispanic male later identified as 25-year-old Jose Hernandez Colon. Mr. Colon succumb to his injuries sustained from the collision and was pronounced dead at the Juan F. Luis Hospital’s emergency room. In the vehicle with Mr. Colon was a 15-year-old minor who sustained minor injuries, according to police.
A preliminary investigation revealed that Mr. Colon’s vehicle was traveling westbound when he attempted to pass two vehicles on the left shoulder, and hit one of the vehicles when he reentered the lane. The impact caused both vehicles to lose control and crash into the guardrail, Mr. Dratte explained.
The accident as of Monday was under investigation by the V.I.P.D.’s Traffic Investigation Bureau.
Separately, the V.I.P.D. is investigating a statutory rape case, after a father reported that his 15-year-old daughter was pregnant, which the daughter confirmed to police in a subsequent interview.
The minor also stated that the father of the fetus is in his early 20s. The V.I.P.D.’s Criminal Investigation Bureau is looking into the matter, Mr. Dratte said.
