ST. CROIX — Virgin Island survivors who are cleaning up and rebuilding after the hurricanes can receive free advice on protecting their homes now and making them more resilient against future disasters at the St. Croix Landmarks Society’s Starving Artists event on Sunday, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced Wednesday.
Hazard Mitigation specialists from FEMA will have a table at the event from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. It’s at the Estate Whim Museum, 52 Estate Whim, Centerline Road, Frederiksted.
FEMA specialists will be available to offer tips and techniques – as well as free publications – about cleaning up mold and mildew from flooded homes, and building hazard-resistant homes. Most of the tips and publications provided at the information station are geared for do-it-yourself homeowners and general contractors.
“FEMA puts mitigation experts out in communities because we know their techniques work to make homes stronger,” said Federal Coordinating Officer William Vogel. “Survivors who take advantage of the consultations will walk away with some excellent project ideas.”
Hurricane-related topics may include ideas for construction methods to protect homes against high winds, such as securing roofs and siding, and the use of special hardware connectors and brackets when framing to make structures stronger, and safer.
