ST. CROIX — The Juan F. Luis Hospital’s operating room is operational once more after being partially closed for 6 days after the O.R.’s two 300-ton chillers malfunctioned and were taken offline for what the hospital said was to facilitate essential repairs.
In a release issued Wednesday, J.F.L. said it closed the O.R.’s elective surgery units because of unconducive humidity levels. However, the hospital said it would’ve still provided service if a patient’s life was at risk and no surgery was needed.
The O.R. was temporarily closed on July 12, with hospital officials expecting the important unit to reopen the next day, which was a Friday. But that estimate was way off the mark, with the O.R. only on Wednesday — 6 days later — reopening.
J.F.L. CEO Wanda Reuben said both of the 300-ton cooling systems were back online and critical surgical services have resumed. She apologized to the community and her hospital staff for inconveniences the shutdown may have caused. “In addition, we want to reassure our community that we are committed to providing superior services within a safe and compliant environment,” she said, according to the release.
