Yes, Machel Montano, the King of Soca and legendary artist — he is the biggest, by far, Soca artist in the world — is coming to the Virgin Islands, courtesy the Donastorg-Hansen gubernatorial team.
The events, which are expected to be major, take place November 3 in St. Thomas at the Donastorg-Hansen headquarters located at Lower Mainstreet, and on November 4 on St. Croix on the open field in Sion Farm, located near the old Island Dairies. Both events start at 6:00 p.m. and run into the night.
Mr. Montano is expected to draw massive crowds in both locations, as his fanbase is far and wide — ranging from people in their 20s to those in their 60s. Mr. Montano started his music career in 1982 with the mega Soca hit, Too Young to Soca. The singer has more Soca hits by far than all of his peers combined. From Vibes Cyan Done in 2011 to Soca Kingdom in 2018 — and all the hits in between — the superstar has blazed the trail of the Soca year after year with chart-topping hits.
Mr. Montano is also the most costly Soca artist to book by a mile. Asked why his campaign took the extraordinary step of hiring Mr. Montano for the campaign event, Adlah Donastorg, gubernatorial candidate in this year’s general election, said, “We worked hard to make this show a reality. It’s all about uplifting Virgin Islanders and certainly after addressing the major issues, [including] education, health care, the economy, etc, we would like to provide a little bit of entertainment tourism to unite Virgin Islanders from all walks of life.”
The Consortium will cover the show live on Facebook and also on the VI Consortium website. The platform, paid to cover the event, will use five cameras and special tricks in an attempt to capture all angles of Mr. Montano’s performances.
The show also features a slew of local acts, among them Spectrum Band, VIO International, Poizon Band and others, according to Mr. Donastorg.
Admission is free, and there will be eats and drinks on sale.
