Separate recent incidents on St. Thomas and St. Croix left a female victim with injuries to her right eye and the alleged perpetrator in custody, while a second incident resulted in the arrest of a young man for unauthorized possession of a firearm, V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Glen Dratte announced Tuesday.
The assault, which occurred on November 21 in St. Thomas, was reported to the 911 emergency call center at about 3:00 a.m., according to Mr. Dratte, who added that the female victim told police that an adult male acquaintance struck her in the right eye with a handheld radio.
The victim told police that she obtained treatment at the Schneider Regional Medical Center, and that the affected eye had turned black and blue, was swollen and shut, and the bone below the eye was fractured.
On Monday, police attempted to speak with suspect Omari Lewis, 36, but Mr. Lewis declined to give a statement, according to Mr. Dratte. He was then arrested and charged with third-degree assault, and was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending his advisement hearing.
No bail was given as per the territory’s domestic violence laws.
Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
On Tuesday at approximately 1:00 p.m., Gyasi Chiverton, 19, was observed tossing an unknown black object on top of the Dynasty Convenience Store, located in Sion Farm, according to Mr. Dratte. A further inspection of the object on top of the roof confirmed a black and silver, fully loaded gun, Mr. Dratte said.
The suspect was arrested and charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm, and was jailed pending his advisement hearing after failing to make bail of $25,000, according to Mr. Dratte.
