ST. THOMAS — The Virgin Islands Port Authority will unveil the new design of the Cyril E. King Airport during a charrette at the University of the Virgin Islands’ Sports and Fitness Center on June 26 beginning at 5:30 p.m., where the authority intends to give the community an opportunity to share its ideas.
Hosted by V.I.P.A. along with aviation consulting firm Kimely-Horn and Associates, the June 26 charrette will be the first of several public meetings that V.I.P.A. said it will host to seek public input prior to the completion of the design.
The new terminal will have the capacity to accommodate the significant growth in air arrivals to St. Thomas since the existing terminal was constructed in 1989, V.I.P.A. said. The proposed layout of the new terminal will improve the travel experience on St. Thomas and ensure that the U.S. Virgin Islands maintains its position as a first-class destination and tourism hub in the Caribbean, the authority said.
Scope of work for the new airport includes:
- The redesign, expansion and modernization of the interior of the terminal to make best use of the two floors of the terminal and the installation of jet bridges
- Construction of a multi-level parking garage to increase parking spaces
- Designated areas for taxis, rental cars and other ground transportation;
- Additional lounge and concession spaces to provide more eateries, retail stores and contemporary traveler amenities
- Tropical landscaping, improvements to the flow of vehicular traffic; and more.
