Man Dies After Being Shot Multiple Times In C’sted; Woman Sustains Gunshot Wounds

ST. CROIX — At about 8:35 p.m. on Wednesday night, the 911 emergency call center received notification of several shots being discharged in the Sunday Market area of Christiansted, in the vicinity of Bienveneto, leaving one man dead and a female victim injured.

That’s according to VIPD Public Information Officer Kevin Jackson, who issued a press release late on Wednesday.

At about 8:55 p.m., a VI Consortium reporter arrived on the scene and saw dozens of bystanders looking on at an ambulance parked in the cordoned off area where the shooting had occurred — near the Christiansted cemetery and a local shop — as EMTs attempted resuscitating the male victim. The female victim was already being transported to the Juan F. Luis Hospital and Medical Center, however her condition remains unknown, according to Jackson.

A VIPD vehicle slammed into a building in the vicinity of the Beeston Hill Medical Center.

Meanwhile, a police vehicle slammed into one of the facilities of the Beeston Hill Medical Center. It seemed apparent that officers in the vehicle were headed to downtown Christiansted responding to the report, however Officer Moses President, the driver, told The  Consortium that he lost control of the vehicle because the road was wet; not because they were hustling to the downtown crime scene.

Officers said when the calls came in on their radios, the scene in Christiansted was described as extremely hostile with multiple shots being fired back-and-forth. The young lady, identified as 24-year-old Jasandra Felix, sustained gunshot wounds in her back, reportedly while trying to flee the scene. The deceased, identified as 30-year-old Humberto Ortiz, sustained multiple gunshots to his chest.

While the ambulance transporting Ortiz made its way out of the cordoned off area, emergency workers could be seen trying hard to revive the wounded Ortiz, and young women were frantically and aimlessly wondering the streets, wailing in the process, still in shock as to what had just taken place. But it was too late; Ortiz died at the Juan F. Luis Hospital’s emergency room.

Detectives with the Criminal Investigation Bureau are investigating the matter.
