ST. THOMAS — A man riding a motorcycle here nearly lost his life after he was struck by a negligent driver, sending the victim airborne and leaving him badly injured, VIPD Public Information Officer Kevin Jackson announced this afternoon.
According to Jackson, citing information made available by officers here, at around 9:00 p.m. on Friday, police with VIPD’s traffic division received notification of an auto accident that occurred in the area of the Weymouth Rhymer Highway and New Hernnhut Road.
Arriving at the location, officers discovered a male individual laying in the roadway, a severely damaged motorcycle that was operated by the victim, and the motorist involved in the accident.
The preliminary report shows that the operator of the motorcycle was traveling west on the Weymouth Rhymer Highway, and was struck by the motorist, who failed to yield the right of way to oncoming traffic and made an improper right turn. As the motorist struck the victim, the motorcycle went airborne and slammed into the pavement.
Emergency medical technicians examined the injured motorcyclist, a 20-year-old male and transported him to the Roy Lester Schneider Hospital, where he was placed into emergency surgery for the injuries he sustained in the collision: a broken right femur (thigh), broken left tibia (shin), contusion to the head and several lacerations and abrasions about the body.
The victim’s condition is unknown at this time, according to Jackson. The motorist, Dale George, 60, was cited with negligent driving for his failure to operate his vehicle in a safe and prudent manner by making an improper turn.
