ST. CROIX — A man was shot to death last night while walking from the David Hamilton Jackson Housing Community, also known as Red Brick, to the Water Gut Housing Community, Police Commissioner Delroy Richards confirmed to The Consortium this morning.
Mr. Jackson said the 911 emergency call center notified the V.I.P.D. just after 11:00 p.m. of a gunshot victim in Water Gut. Upon arrival on the scene, police met the victim lying on the ground, and he was confirmed dead following an examination by emergency medical technicians.
According to the police commissioner, who cited a preliminary report, the victim was walking through a park from one housing community to another when he heard a gunshot rang out. Mr. Richards said the victim then started to run and suddenly fell. He stood up and began running again and collapsed once more near the apartment in which he lived.
Said to be a Hispanic male in his early 20s, Mr. Richards said the victim — whose identity police have yet to release — was no stranger to the law, and was charged in the past with assault and robbery.
