Two men were recently arrested on separate charges, according to V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Glen Dratte — one on a second-degree rape charge, and another for assault a police officer on January 6 during parade festivities.
In separate releases issued late Monday, Mr. Dratte said Kewasi James, 27, above, a resident of St. Thomas, was arrested on Monday after being positively identified by a victim who he allegedly raped in April, 2017. In according with the territory’s domestic violence laws, no bail was granted to Mr. James, and he was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending his advisement hearing.
On Saturday, police on St. Croix arrested 40-year-old Rami Al-Obany for allegedly striking an officer who told Mr. Al-Obany that he could not pass through the Festival Parade route. According to Mr. Dratte, Mr. Al-Obany had disregarded the officer’s directive and proceeded to pass anyway. When the officer attempted to stop him, Mr. Al-Obany struck the officer.
The alleged offender was arrested and charged with interfering with an officer discharging his or her duties. He was released on $1,000 bond, pending his advisement hearing.
